Why are you so cheap?

Elise had traveled to New York and invited members of her family to celebrate her 70th birthday at her friend Dave’s where she and Hal were staying for a few days. During the celebration, Kevin, her sister’s partner, said to Elise “You’re always staying at a friend’s so you don’t have to pay for a hotel.” Elise ignored Kevin’s remark because she knew he had a lot to drink and when he does, he usually gets critical, of her especially. 

Before Elise and Hal returned to New York, she thought it would be nice for the sisters and their partners to get together for a dinner out, so she found a restaurant that seemed to be a good one and was convenient for all of them.  When the three couples were seated, Elise looked over the menu.

“Not many choices and quite expensive,” she said disappointingly.

“You’re never happy,” said her sister Nan

“I’m sure we can find something to eat. Let’s share a few appetizers,” said her sister Bess.

“Sure,” Elise agreed.

The drinks were brought and the appetizers arrived. They seemed to be enjoying the meal. Elise wasn’t happy with the food, but she didn’t say anything.

The family members chatted amongst themselves.

Kevin, sitting diagonally across from Elise said, “Why are you so cheap, Elise?”

“You’re the one who’s cheap, Kevin. Not me,” Elise replied.

“Why are you so cheap?”

“Shut up.”

“You’re so cheap.”

At that point, Elise couldn’t stand to look at Kevin face for all his cynicism. She saw in him the disdain he had for his own brothers and sisters, for some of the workers he employed, for other members of her family when they weren’t in the room. She saw venom in his eyes, bitterness in his lips, and criticism in his cheeks. Elise wanted to erase all that negativity from his face. 

She looked at the small glass of water placed in front of Kevin on the table. Her reflex was to pick up the glass and throw the water in his face.  Seconds later, she did just that.
